Dear Prime Minister,
Many Canadians were shocked to learn of the murder of a highly-trained, prize-winning police horse, Brigadier, on the streets of Toronto recently.
Aside from the cost to the taxpayer of losing a valuable service animal, the fact that a Canadian would feel entitled to vent his or her rage on an innocent animal is chilling. Sadly, the only way to impress some individuals with the value of life is by punishment. The needless harm of any animal speaks to the value system in place in our society, and to allow anyone to harm an animal like Brigadier, who was—and still is--a public figure, is tantamount to condoning senseless violence.
Canadians look to you to right this wrong in our justice system that would allow anyone to harm an animal purely out of a misguided sense of human entitlement. We need you to further the cause of “Brigadier's Law” so that all will know to respect service animals and, in effect, others; whether they be in law enforcement, search and rescue, or other service to humans (including companion animals, who daily improve the human condition) our respect for them is crucial to a humane value system.
Canadians will be deeply indebted to you for your attention to this grave matter.
Sincerely,
[your signature
